Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche is a lineage holder of the Karma Kagyu and Nyingma schools of Tibetan Buddhism, whose dedication to benefiting others through his practice and teaching has endeared him to many students around the world.

Rinpoche spent many years in his youth training in the meditative and philosophical traditions of Tibetan Buddhism, completing a traditional three-year retreat of his own and overseeing two more as retreat master before he was 25. In 2001, he embarked on a period of intensive teaching worldwide that lasted a decade. During that time, he founded the Tergar Meditation Community and introduced the Joy of Living meditation programme, a path of practice that is open to all, regardless of religion or cultural tradition. His interest in and engagement with scientific research into the effects of meditation on our minds also led to the publication of the first of his several books, The Joy of Living: Unlocking the Secret and Science of Happiness, a New York Times best-seller that has been translated into over 20 languages.

In June 2011, Rinpoche surprised many by leaving for a wandering retreat in the Himalayas and the plains of India, telling no one of his plans. He returned after four-and-a-half years, in November 2015. Since then, he has been teaching around the world, while attending to the monasteries in Nepal and India under his care.

Rinpoche returns to Hong Kong in October and will be offering a series of teachings, including two Joy of Living workshops and two public talks. Whether you are a novice or experienced meditator, a Buddhist or a non-Buddhist, we invite you to take this opportunity to explore the practice of meditation with Mingyur Rinpoche.

Joy of Living Meditation Workshops — Essence Teachings

The Joy of Living is a path of meditation practice that is open to everyone, regardless of religious or cultural background. Meditation enables us to discover a lasting contentment that is not subject to the fluctuating conditions of the external world, and to nurture the qualities of wisdom and compassion that naturally manifest from awareness itself.

Though rooted in Buddhist teachings, the practices taught in the Joy of Living programme are not religious in nature. They deal with the basic functions of the mind, such as mindful awareness and the movements towards happiness and away from suffering. In working with these qualities of mind, we gradually transform our relationship with our everyday experience, and learn to approach every thought, feeling and sensory experience with unconditional warmth and acceptance.

The programme contains three levels:
Level 1: Calming the Mind
Level 2: Opening the Heart
Level 3: Awakening Wisdom

Awareness leadership is the art of cultivating and leading with awareness, compassion and wisdom. Join Tibetan Buddhist meditation teacher Venerable Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, affective neuroscience pioneer Professor Richard Davidson, psychologist and author of the international bestseller Emotional Intelligence Dr Daniel Goleman (via live stream) and world-renowned martial artist Mr Jet Li for a two-day workshop to explore the intersection of mind, science and leadership. At the workshop, we will present the benefits of training our powerful minds and explore how meditation practices naturally complement effective leadership in our working lives.

Ancient spiritual traditions and modern science both teach that our minds can be trained so that we become more aware of our circumstances, less reactive to stress, more compassionate, and better equipped to approach challenging issues in a calm and thoughtful manner. With training, we discover our innate ability to navigate life’s uncertainties with confidence, and learn to transform problems into opportunities for beneficial growth.

Over the two days, Mingyur Rinpoche will introduce the concept of “awareness” and how it is linked to effective leadership and wisdom management, and guide us through some simple meditation exercises to recognise awareness, a natural quality of our minds; Prof Davidson will speak about the important scientific finding of neuroplasticity, that is, the brain’s immense potential to be “rewired”, and how and why meditation works to unleash that potential for our benefit; and Dr Goleman will show how our emotional intelligence and awareness can work together to create a powerful leadership model.

In addition, three local speakers, each a leader in their field, will share how awareness and meditation practices have helped them to become an outstanding leader and meet life’s challenges. Mr Andrew Fung, BBS, JP, chief financial officer of Henderson Land Development Co Ltd, will talk about how awareness leadership complements corporate management; Dr Rosalie Lo, a senior clinical psychologist at Hospital Authority, will speak about awareness, meditation and mindfulness training in the context of stress and trauma management; and Green Monday co-founder and Mind Reset Institute founder Mr David Yeung will explore the link between awareness and creativity and innovative entrepreneurship.

This workshop is open to all who wish to explore their minds, and will be especially helpful for those in leadership positions.

This is a ticketed event presented by Tergar Asia Foundation, a registered charity. All proceeds, minus the costs of organisation, will go towards funding Tergar Asia’s vision of supporting communities across the region in learning to live with awareness, compassion and wisdom.

Registration fees: All fees include daily vegetarian lunch (accommodation not included)

On Death and Dying

Oct 09 | Mon |
Venue: Queen Elizabeth Stadium
Time: 7.30pm - 9.30pm
Too often in life, we wish we could have done a little better, tried a little harder, or be smarter, kinder, richer or simply better than we believe we are. But life has its ups and downs, as we know, and being very critical of ourselves can lead to even more problems. Why not take life’s challenges as an opportunity for growth and self-discovery? If we care to look, we may well be surprised by the many good qualities we find.

Death and dying are rarely talked about even though all of us must go through it at some point. This reluctance may leave us unprepared and filled with regrets when the time comes. Actually, there are many benefits to taking an open-minded view of this fact of life. An understanding of death can help us to appreciate our precious human life and recognise the innate goodness that is already within us.

The talks will be conducted in English, with Cantonese translation. Information about ticket sales will be posted as soon as it is available. Please check this website and Tergar Hong Kong’s Facebook page for updates.

About Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche

Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche possesses a rare ability to present the ancient wisdom of Tibet in a fresh, engaging manner. His profound yet accessible teachings and playful sense of humour have endeared him to students around the world. Most uniquely, Rinpoche’s teachings weave together his own personal experiences with modern scientific research, relating both to the practice of meditation.

Born in 1975 in the Himalayan border regions between Tibet and Nepal, Mingyur Rinpoche is a rising star among the new generation of Tibetan Buddhist masters. From a young age, Rinpoche was drawn to a life of contemplation. He spent many years of his childhood in strict retreat. At the age of 17, he was invited to be a teacher at his monastery’s three-year retreat centre, a position rarely held by such a young lama. He also completed the traditional Buddhist training in philosophy and psychology, before founding a monastic college at his home monastery in north India.

In addition to extensive training in the meditative and philosophical traditions of Tibetan Buddhism, Mingyur Rinpoche has also had a lifelong interest in Western science and psychology. At an early age, he began a series of informal discussions with the famed neuroscientist Francisco Varela, who came to Nepal to learn meditation from his father, Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche.
Many years later, in 2002, Mingyur Rinpoche and a handful of other long-term meditators were invited to the Waisman Laboratory for Brain Imaging and Behavior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where Richard Davidson, Antoine Lutz, and other scientists examined the effects of meditation on the brains of advanced meditators. The results of this ground-breaking research were reported in many of the world’s most widely read publications, including National Geographic and Time.

Mingyur Rinpoche teaches throughout the world, with centres on five continents. His candid, often humorous accounts of his own personal difficulties have endeared him to thousands of students around the world. His best-selling book, The Joy of Living: Unlocking the Secret and Science of Happiness, debuted on the New York Times bestseller list and has been translated into over 20 languages. Rinpoche’s most recent books are Turning Confusion into Clarity: A Guide to the Foundation Practices of Tibetan BuddhismJoyful Wisdom: Embracing Change and Finding Freedom, and an illustrated children’s book entitled Ziji: The Puppy that Learned to Meditate.

In early June, 2011, Mingyur Rinpoche walked out of his monastery in Bodhgaya, India and began a wandering retreat through the Himalayas and the plains of India that lasted four-and-a-half years. When not attending to the monasteries under his care in India and Nepal, Rinpoche spends time each year travelling and teaching worldwide.
